Our Mayor is the figurehead of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The Mayor is elected at the Annual Council Meeting in May and serves for one year. The Mayor (and Deputy Mayor) are members of the Council.
The Mayor’s duties include representing the Council on public occasions, such as Remembrance Day services and chairing meetings of the Council. The Mayor also attends civic functions including citizenship ceremonies.
The current Mayor is Councillor Thay Thayalan
Councillor Thayalan is actively involved in various charitable organisations working to promote arts, culture, sports, diversity and equality, which he is passionate about. He has held numerous roles at Kingston Race Equalities Council and was also one of the founding members of Kingston Carnival and Global Arts Kingston.
Councillor Thayalan has also served as a trustee of ‘Kingston Arts council’ (now called Kingston Arts), ‘Me We’ and Kingston Community Voluntary Service (now called Kingston Voluntary Action). Within his own community, Councillor Thayalan is the founder member of the Institute of Tamil Culture, a supplementary school established to promote Tamil language and culture.
He came to the UK as a student in 1970 and graduated in Electronic Engineering in 1973 from Southall College of Technology. He is now retired having worked in the computer industry for over forty years in different engineering and management roles. He lives with his wife Lata and daughter Meera.
