Our Mayor is the figurehead of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. The Mayor is elected at the Annual Council Meeting in May and serves for one year. The Mayor (and Deputy Mayor) are members of the Council.
The Mayor’s duties include representing the Council on public occasions, such as Remembrance Day services and chairing meetings of the Council. The Mayor also attends civic functions including citizenship ceremonies.
The current Mayor is Councillor Julie Pickering
Julie Pickering has lived in Coombe Vale ward for 28 years with her husband James and two children Ben and Anna. Julie was elected a Councillor in in Coombe Vale ward in 2011 and has since held portfolio roles in the Council for Adult Social Care, Public Health, Partnerships with the Volutary and Community Sector , NHS, Police and others as well as overseeing the overall framework of local authority contracts and commissioning.
Julie was born in Nottingham and went to secondary school in Yorkshire followed by Sheffield University. She joined the Marks and Spencer graduate trainee scheme and worked in various senior management roles for 18 years before taking a career break to bring her two children up.
During this time, James and her were told of their son's terminal diagnosis so Julie became a carer to him till he passed away in 2009 aged 12. She became involved in the charity supporting his condition and eventually became chair, taking it from a small contact organisation to being one of the top 10% in the UK now. After he passed away, Julie became an independent business and training consultant before taking up her role as a Councillor.
Julie currently sits on the Rose Theatre board and has sat on Kingston Hospital governing body, Kingston Primary Commissioning Group, South West London Collaborative Leadership Group, London Health & Wellbeing Board Chairs and Grant committee as well as being a local school governor.
Julie is delighted to represent the Royal Borough of Kingston as its Mayor over 2017/18 with James as her Consort and Anna as the Mayoress. She looks forward to both meeting more fellow Kingstonians as well as promoting Kingston across the wider London region.
