Becoming a Library volunteer
Who can apply?
Are you interested in helping people get started using the computer? Do you enjoy helping young children learn new skills or supporting a group leader? Or would you be able to help someone fill out an online job application?
We always want to hear from people who have up to two hours a week to spare for six months or more who would like to share their skills in our libraries. (A shorter time period may be agreed for youth volunteers).
Rather than general library assistants, we look for volunteers who can add to our service such as:
- IT buddies
- Back to work group helpers
- Online reference and e-book champions
- Rhyme time and story time assistants
How to apply
To apply to volunteer at your local library please complete the online form.
After you apply
We will let you know we have received your application. We will then contact you when a suitable vacancy comes up and invite you for an informal interview.
We will ask for two references from you and if you will be working with children or vulnerable adults, we will also ask you to undertake a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check - previously know as a CRB check.
Starting as a Volunteer
We will invite you to come in and meet your placement supervisor who will talk to you about your role, information about health and safety, and answer any questions.
We will then give you a start date – and a four week trial. Your supervisor will make sure you have enough space and equipment for your tasks. They will give you regular supervision and feedback on your contribution.
At the end of your trial, your supervisor will sit down with you to review how things are going. At this stage, the placement can be ended by you or the supervisor if either of you think it’s not a good match for you.
Ending the placement
As a volunteer, you are important to us, so we ask you to give us as much notice as possible if you know you will be unavailable for a period of time or if you wish to end your time as a volunteer.
Your placement must run for at least three months for us to provide a reference.
For more information on what you can expect from us as a volunteer read our Kingston Libraries Volunteer Policy.
