Running a food business

Register your food business

Important information for all food business operators - from the 1 December 2017 there will be a £170 charge per visit for any Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) rerating inspection request. We hope that food business operators will understand that no rerating inspection visit will be completed until full payment is received.

Register 28 days before you start

One of the first things you need to do when starting up a food business is to register it with us. You must register with us 28 days before starting any food operations [by Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, Article 6(2)].

Food operations include:

  • storing food
  • preparing food
  • distributing food
  • selling food

You must register every premises where you carry out food operations, including your home, and mobile or temporary premises such as stalls and vans.

Once you have registered your business, if you make any significant changes to business or the details which were included on the form - you must let us know.

If you make, prepare or handle food that comes from animals, for example meat or dairy products, your premises might need to be inspected and approved by us. If you are inspected and approved, you don’t need to register as well.

Complete our online form (on GOV.UK) to register your new food business with us.

Contact us if you think you need approval or have changes to tell us about.

If you require a rerating of your premises, please download the document below, complete and return it to the email address provided or send it in the post.
