Council tenancies – your rights and responsibilities

Types of tenancy, changes and your rights

A tenancy agreement is a legal contract that tells you the rules (terms) for living in a property and your responsibilities. One of our officers will go through the contract with you before you sign it.

As a council tenant, you have certain rights, which will also be set out in the contract document. They will depend on the type of tenancy you have.

Report a change to your council tenancy

You need to tell us about any changes to your household that may affect your tenancy including:
  • any births or deaths
  • if somebody moves in permanently
  • if somebody leaves or stops living with you
