Dangerous structures and emergencies

Buildings and structures can become dangerous following a fire, an explosion, the impact of a vehicle or a sudden collapse.

If you think that a structure may be dangerous, call our Building Control team - we are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Removing the danger

We’ll remove the danger immediately if necessary and make sure the work is carried out in the most suitable way.

If this is on your property we’ll try to contact you first.  If we can’t, we’ll usually leave a message saying what we’ve done and who you need to contact.

If your property is in a dangerous condition, but isn’t an immediate hazard, we may have to issue a dangerous structure notice and will leave contact details for further advice. You’ll be given reasonable time to reply to this.

Charges

If we have to take emergency action to remove or secure a dangerous structure, we’ll have to charge the structure’s owner to cover our administration costs and our contractor’s fees.

With minor defects in premises we’ll usually offer free informal advice on the best way of fixing problems. We only take direct action ourselves when it is absolutely necessary.
