Working with and removing asbestos

Removing asbestos

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website provides detailed information on working with asbestos.

Some types of asbestos can only be removed by a licensed contractor. Higher risk materials containing asbestos (sprayed asbestos coatings, asbestos insulation, asbestos lagging and most work involving asbestos insulating board (AIB)) can only be worked on or removed by a licensed contractor.

For more information on when a licence is needed see the HSE website.

Hiring a tradesperson

If you hire a tradesperson to remove asbestos from your home, check that they have the proper license, training and equipment to do this. The HSE website provides a list of all current asbestos licence holders.

Doing it yourself

Many residents ask us for advice on dismantling their garages or sheds which have been made with asbestos cement sheeting. Before undertaking the removal yourself, check that the type of work does not require a licence on the HSE asbestos removal web page.

If the work does not need a license then you may find the HSE’s asbestos essentials section useful. It includes a fact sheet on 'Removing asbestos cement sheets, gutters, etc. and dismantling a small asbestos cement structure'.
