Drainage for major developments

Why we assess drainage

We're the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA). We need to be consulted on all major planning applications in the borough (see Flood and Water Management Act, 2010).

When we receive your major planning application we'll:

  • assess the proposed drainage designs
  • check that the designs account for the change in surface water runoff brought about by the new development
  • check that the designs meet local, regional and national standards and policies
  • check that you're using sustainable drainage methods wherever possible
  • check that the sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) chosen are effective and suitable to the location
  • assess whether the necessary treatment of pollutants has been included
  • provide comment to the Local Planning Authority
