Seeking Professional Advice

There are a number of professional bodies that help to regulate the built environment profession. Below are some useful links:

The Architects Registration Board (ARB)

The UK's independent regulator of architects. Under Section 20 of the Architects Act 1997, the title 'architect' is protected. It can only be used in business or practice by people who have had the education, training and experience needed to become an architect and who are registered with the ARB.

If you would like to find a registered architect in your area or check that the architect you are using is registered, you can do this here.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)

A professional body of architects primarily in the UK but also internationally. They champion better buildings, communities and the environment through architecture and its members. They also provide the standards, training, support and recognition for its 40,000 members.

There is a lot of information available on RIBA's website which can help you to find an architect, learn about architecture or just get inspired:

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

The UK's leading planning body for spatial, sustainable and inclusive planning. It is a membership organisation and a Chartered Institute responsible for maintaining professional standards and accrediting world class planning courses nationally and internationally.

You can use the website to find out how the planning system works, read case studies and publications, search for an RTPI accredited planner and if you are an individual or a community you can get free planning advice:

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)

A professional body that accredits professionals within the land, property and construction sectors worldwide. They regulate and promote the profession; maintain educational and professional standards; protect clients and consumers via a strict code of ethics, and provide impartial advice and guidance.

You can use their website to access this information and find registered members of RICS.
