Landfill space is running out and buried waste releases climate-changing gases. Therefore, new ways of dealing with waste are needed. Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton are working together to meet this challenge by developing the South London Waste Plan.
The boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton have launched a six-week consultation period giving residents an opportunity to comment on the suitability of eight sites for waste management purposes.
These eight sites are ‘additional sites’ that were put forward by residents, land owners and waste operators during a previous stage of consultation which took place between July and October 2009.
The suitability of these eight additional sites has been assessed using a set of robust criteria that takes into consideration issues such as flood risk, traffic impacts and visual intrusion and gives a score to each site. All eight sites scored relatively poorly, when compared with the 28 sites that were shortlisted in the previous stage of the consultation in 2009. This indicates that, from a planning perspective, there would be obstacles to them being used for waste management purposes.
Residents and other interested parties are now being asked for their views on the assessments of the eight sites listed below and their suitability for waste management purposes. Please note that we are not asking for comments on sites identified in earlier consultations, nor inviting people to identify any further sites.
We have prepared a consultation document, with a questionnaire that summarises the assessment of the above sites and asks for your views. You must send us your responses by no later than midnight on Monday 22 March 2010. We cannot extend this consultation period.
Your views will help develop the final version of the South London Waste Plan which will now be published for your comments in October-November 2010. This is your chance to make your voice heard and to help shape policy that will affect where you live.
Please note: responses received during previous stages of the South London Waste Plan will not automatically be considered a response to this Stage 2a consultation. If you would like us to consider responses made previously, please confirm this in writing to the Project Manager.
