Kingston secures new permanent School Street in Chessington

Parents, carers and children from Castle Hill Primary School will continue to enjoy safer drop-offs and pick-ups at the school gates.

The School Streets scheme on Buckland Road, which was trialled from 14 September 2020, was made permanent at the South of the Borough Committee on 19 January 2022.

School Streets limit motor vehicle access during drop-off and pick-up times, supporting active travel by making it safer for children and their families to walk, cycle and scoot to school and contributing to cleaner air.

Lovelace Primary School in Chessington was the first school in the borough to benefit from a permanent scheme in March 2020.

Cllr Stephanie Archer, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainable Transport at Kingston Council, said:

“This is our second ever permanent School Street and I’m delighted to see Chessington is leading the way on having safer, healthier environments for children and their families.

“We’re committed to taking climate action and these schemes encourage sustainable transport choices, limit engine idling and improve air quality.

“This is just the start - we’ve got five more trial School Streets underway, with two going to Kingston Neighbourhood Committee today for decisions on whether they should become permanent. My hope is that in the years to come we will see more safer, healthier school streets like this all across the borough. "

The scheme will continue to operate on weekdays for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon during school term time only.
