London Mayor and the Greater London Assembly

The first ever directly elected Mayor of London together with the Greater London Assembly were elected in May 2000.  Both the Mayor and the Members of the Greater London Assembly are elected for four-year terms with the next elections due in 2012.  Their role is to promote economic and social development and improve the environment in Greater London.  The Mayor is charged with devising strategies and action plans to tackle London-wide issues.  The Assembly provides a check and balance on the Mayor, scrutinises his performance and investigates issues of London-wide significance.

The Royal Borough of Kingston (together with Richmond and Hounslow) is in the South West Constituency of the Greater London Authority.  The Assembly itself is made up of 25 Members, 14 of whom are elected to represent individual constituencies.
