"In a year of recession, our community is facing a widening financial divide. I personally do not believe it is right that in a capital city, in the 21st Century, we should have people subjected to the depths of poverty, among whom include our ex-servicemen and women. I am also aware of the devastation that redundancy brings to whole families.
In response, we have set up a special charity to raise funds, which are desperately needed, to support projects that would not normally come under the remit of Council or Health Authority funding. In delivering a response, the money will be allocated to local voluntary bodies who will work in a focused, co-ordinated effort to bring relief to the most vulnerable in our society. Please support your local community by donating generously to The Mayor’s Charity.
An immediate priority is to set up shower facilities and a place to store belongings to enable the homeless to be well presented for job interviews, bringing back self respect.
In the long term, we hope to support the homeless, including those with alcohol and drug misuse issues, to pick up their lives again, by planning a permanent night shelter within our community and thereby restoring their hope and dignity.
Local residents can help - just £5 can make a real difference to the local community. Help me make a difference by supporting the Mayor's Charity."
There is also an opportunity for one local business to have their company logo printed on this year's charity leaflet. If your business would like to sponsor this leaflet, please contact the Mayor's Office on 020 8547 5030/5027 for further information.
