Stop the Monument Being Built on College Roundabout

Raised by: Mr R Hedges on 15 February 2008

The purpose of this petition is to stop the Liberal Democrats plan to build a monument / statue on College Road roundabout Kingston . The project is far too expensive , and in the light of the cutbacks the ruling council has to make in order to meet its budget for the coming two years . This is just ANOTHER waste of council taxpayers money . Such a monument also has road safety concerns as it would act as a 'distraction' to the motorist.

Petition Progress

An important element of the K+20 Area Action Plan for Kingston town centre is the creation of attractive ‘gateways’ to mark and enhance the five main approaches to the town centre, to achieve a sense of arrival and identity (Policy K10 Town Centre Public Realm). These will be funded from contributions received under S106 plannning agreements. A total of £26,000 has been allocated for the 5 gateways and the project is being progressed by the Public Art Panel. The Public Art Panel consists of Council Members, the Kingston Society, Kingston Town Centre Management, Kingston University and Kingston College. The Panel has commissioned Kingston College and Kingston University students to develop artistic ideas for the College roundabout and an exhibition of initial ideas was held on 11 and 12 February. Visitors were able to vote for their favourite ideas and the Panel will be drawing up a shortlist of ideas to be developed in more detail, before selecting the final design later in the spring.
