Who is eligible to vote?
British citizens, citizens of other Commonwealth countries, citizens of the Irish Republic and citizens of other European Union countries. You must be on the Register to be entitled to vote. Paying council tax does not automatically entitle you to a vote; you must be registered.
Registering to Vote
The revised register of electors was published on 1 December 2008.
Under the system of rolling registration, eligible electors can register to vote throughout the year. Between September and the end of November Electoral Services carry out an annual canvass of all properties within the Borough. Each household will receive an annual registration form and must list the names of all eligible electors on this form. If there are no eligible electors in a household you should still return the form stating the reason why there are no eligible voters. A revised register is published on the 1st of December each year.
Between December and the following September we operate the system of rolling registration. On the first working day of each month Electoral Services publish an updated list to the current register. This means that if you change your address we can send you the necessary form to transfer your registration to your new address. Amendments can also be made if your change your name, become eligible to vote for the first time or if our existing records are incorrect.
Note: The deadline to register at a new address in time for the European Parliamentary election has now passed. If you are still registered to vote at your previous address then you may be able to vote using that address – you should contact the Electoral Registration Office that covers your previous address.. Any applications received now will not be processed until after the election. Please contact Electoral Services if you require an application form to amend your details on the register of electors at your current address or add your name to the Register of Electors at a new address.
