Overview Commission

The role of the Overview Commission is to help the Executive in:

  • Reviewing existing policy
  • Developing new policy.

The Commission carries out detailed assessments of existing policies, how they are operating and their impact on the lives of local people. The topics chosen may come from requests from the Executive, issues raised by members of the public, perhaps during a consultation exercise, or by Councillors reflecting local concerns. The Scrutiny Panel can also ask the Commission to look at up to two areas. The Commission also looks at the need for new policies, which might be to support new priorities or because the Council has been given new powers or responsibilities.

The Overview Commission is an Administration led body with 19 members. The membership is made up of:

  • 15 Councillors
  • a representative of the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education
  • a representative of the Archdiocese of Southwark Commission for Schools and Colleges
  • two Parent Governor Representatives (primary and secondary).

Overview Working Groups

The detailed work is done by Councillor working groups supported by officers. Information is gathered from a variety of sources, including from outside the Council, and the Commission then presents reports making recommendations to the Executive on changes to existing policies or a framework for a new policy.

Current Working Groups

The Overview Commission has established working groups to investigate the following topics:

  • Review of Library Services
  • Alternatives to A Boards

Working Groups report back regularly to the Overview Commission and their latest updates can be found in the Agendas and Minutes section.
