The role of the Overview Commission is to help the Executive in:
The Commission carries out detailed assessments of existing policies, how they are operating and their impact on the lives of local people. The topics chosen may come from requests from the Executive, issues raised by members of the public, perhaps during a consultation exercise, or by Councillors reflecting local concerns. The Scrutiny Panel can also ask the Commission to look at up to two areas. The Commission also looks at the need for new policies, which might be to support new priorities or because the Council has been given new powers or responsibilities.
The Overview Commission is an Administration led body with 19 members. The membership is made up of:
The detailed work is done by Councillor working groups supported by officers. Information is gathered from a variety of sources, including from outside the Council, and the Commission then presents reports making recommendations to the Executive on changes to existing policies or a framework for a new policy.
