Feedback from Surbiton Town Centre Discussion Groups
- Group 1
- Accessibility to pedestrians obstructed by street furniture
- Station forecourt – more cycle racks, too much clutter
- Lack of interesting shops
- Group 2
- Should emphasis be on pedestrians or vehicles?
- Congestion caused by lack of parking and not enough disabled bays
- Limited small public space/green areas
- Group 3
- Pedestrian movement on Victoria Road – width of pavements not sufficient
- Better links needed to the riverside
- Roundabout at station needs attention
- Group 4
- Safe access for pedestrians at the station – red surface crossings need to be removed
- Streetscape in Victoria Road needs attention in particular pavement quality and street furniture unnecessary ‘A’Boards
- Retail on offer – small range of shops
- Group 5
- Pavement width on south side coupled with pavement on street – difficult wheelchair access and not suitable for flow of pedestrians
- Roundabout Safety
- Variety of businesses in Surbiton
- Group 1
- Pavements very narrow – pinch problems in narrow sections around bus stops, especially by Halifax
- Too much street furniture
- Pedestrian safety at the roundabout – especially near the station.
- Group 2
- Pavement narrow on one side and wider on the other
- Lighting on side streets – St. James Road very dark in particular at the far end
- Station concourse dangerous – difficult for pedestrians to cross
- Less cycle parking areas at the front of the station
- Group 3
- Parking – need longer term provision
- Bring bigger name shops into the area to make it more interesting
- Find something to capture the interest of commuters to keep them in the town and encourage them to use it e.g. leisure facilities.
- Group 1
- Pavement width could be increased along the length of Victoria Road from St. James to Brighton Road, keeping two-way traffic, but possibly reduce access at peak times.
- Keep pavements equal size and have planting on both sides of the road.
- Provide access by service road behind shops from the station
- Remove unnecessary clutter but include seating – remove BT boxes
- Group 2
- Need to widen pavements on both sides if possible. All on-street parking could be removed
- All through traffic to be retained i.e. general traffic
- Keep parking on the north sides if needs be
- Station forecourt needs clear definition between vehicles and pedestrian access
- Group 3
- Deliveries – some restrictions on loading hours on Victoria Road would help pedestrian environment
- Roundabout – reduce clutter in the area providing more pedestrian space
- Sainsbury’s end of Victoria Road – expand public space outside Zizzi.
- Group 4
- Safe access to station – look at pedestrian priorities over vehicles and consider lighting and zebra crossings
- Look for best ways for cyclist parking to be installed, preventing street clutter
- Widening north side of Victoria Road not to extent that traffic flow is reduced.
- Group 5
- Rear delivery access road from station approach to 67 south side of Victoria Road
- From top of Victoria Road – station to St. Andrew’s Road less traffic to enable more trees but less clutter – to improve appearance
- Group 1
- Reduced clutter would have considerable impact
- Station forecourt could be better used to integrate with buses; removal of bus stop next to Halifax so people could use Waitrose stop. Taxis could be moved too. Issue with roundabout
- More independent shops should be encouraged. Woolworths site could be used for a farmers’ market or craft/artists base for students
- Do not want to divert traffic away to residential roads
- Keep Surbiton’s identity intact; protect it
- Parking spaces need to be made more inviting – to feel safer and more user friendly - and signage should be improved
- Group 2
- More youth facilities in Victoria Road area – Woolworths site is a potential youth cafe or a library with internet access in the area
- Station forecourt is a poor use of space – taxis should be moved to rear access road towards Sainsbury and away from St. Mark’s Tavern
- Area outside of St. Mark’s Tavern could be used for market stalls weekly/daily to make better use of the space
- Improved pavement space on Victoria Road with less signage and clutter. Wider pavements and better quality.
- No reason for implementing different traffic schemes when what is in place works
- A map encouraging people to visit the town centre, including Brighton Road
