People who live and work in Surbiton and Tolworth have been getting involved in the decisions that affect them by letting us know their issues, aspirations, priorities and suggested actions for the Neighbourhood.
These have been captured in the form of a Surbiton Neighbourhood Community Plan which will assist those who provide public services to focus on the issues which matter most to the community.
Well over a hundred people have taken part and we would like to thank everyone who has made this so worthwhile.
The Surbiton Neighbourhood Community Plan has now been appoved by the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee and will be a developing document to reflect changing needs and aspirations within the community, to be updated and reviewed by the Committee.
The new Coalition Government has endorsed the approach, which has already started, to concentrate on the Localism agenda and devolving power to local people. There has never been a better time to get involved in the decisions that affect you and influence what happens in your local area.
A formal Community Steering Group comprising Council Members and local people has been set up to work with the Council and its Partners to take forward the Neighbourhood Community Plan.
The main aim is to ensure that the issues, aspirations and suggested actions are at the forefront of decision-making and that service provision reflects community priorities.
If you prefer not to attend meetings, there is also an opportunity to take part online as part of a wider Community Panel.
It is not too late to join The Community Steering Group or the Community Panel! Your contribution will be welcomed and greatly appreciated.
If you would like to get involved, please email christina.gardner@rbk.kingston.gov.uk or telephone: 020 8547 5369
The Community Steering Group meet as and when required and communicate by email, text, phone or post depending on the participants' preferences. The actions in the Community Plan have been prioritised and four Task Groups are progressing the following issues:
Members of the Steering Group joined others in the community to consider lessons learned from a Planning Inquiry. In July, the Group Manager for Development Management, Place and Regeneration at RBK led a discussion group on a Planning Application which had been approved following an Appeal. This provided an opportunity for residents to gain an insight into Planning regulations, and in particular how decision-making relates to the Planning Appeal process.
This is being linked to the Surbiton Town Centre Improvement Strategy and community events in the Town Centre. Members of the Steering Group and Panel joined others in the community including residents, partners and interested parties to comment on, challenge and make suggestions about the Improvement Strategy including projects being consulted upon and implemented under the medium-term improvements. For more information on the Surbiton Town Centre Improvement Strategy please see:
Progress and actions on the Neighbourhood Community Plan will be reported to the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee later in the year and there will be up-dates on this web-site.
