Kingston Council, working in partnership with Kingston Primary Care Trust, has been awarded the first prize in a national competition for the booklet ‘Loving people and making love’ for people with learning disabilities. The Association of Social Care Communicators (ASCC) and Community Care Magazine awarded Kingston Council the top prize for publication excellence.
The judges were impressed by the accessible and frank tone of voice that the publication dealt with a sensitive subject area. The judges also commended the council’s partnership with the Easy Information Group, made up of local people with learning disabilities, who were consulted on the publication.
Councillor Penny Shelton, Executive Member for Housing and Adult Services said; “Local people with learning disabilities have been involved in the production of the booklet every step of the way to ensure it reflects their needs. We are delighted that the ASCC and Community Care Magazine have recognised the value the publication will have for this community.”
Mark Ivory of Community Care magazine presented the award at the Association of Social Care Communicators Annual Conference on 9 October 2006, in the Marriott City Centre Hotel, Bristol.
