New Director disappoints

The man recently appointed as Kingston’s new Director of Environmental Services has decided not to take up the appointment. John Ashworth had signed a contract of employment with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and agreed to commence work in Kingston on 20 March 2006.

However, in a surprising letter received this week, he informed the Royal Borough that he has decided not to take up the appointment. Mr Ashworth says a number of reasons led to his decision, including a wish to develop the role in his current post and due to personal circumstances which have made a significant contribution.’

Commenting, Bruce McDonald, Chief Executive, says: “It is unprecedented, in my experience, for someone to withdraw from a post at this level at this late stage. Whilst we will wish to take a little time to take stock of the situation, the most reassuring thing is that we already have an experienced team with effective interim arrangements in place.  This team has stood us in good stead and will continue to do so.”

Interim Director of Environmental Services, Frank Quigg, added: "From my experience in local government I think that Kingston is amongst the best of places to work, so this is disappointing news. However, I will do all I can to help the Council work through the next steps with the help of the excellent and very motivated Environment team."
