Apply for planning permission - How to apply

It’s easiest to make your planning permission application online through the Planning Portal. The standard application forms cover a range of consents, which can all be applied for online.

All you have to do is:
  • create an account
  • say what type of permission or consent you need
  • read through our validation list so you know what to upload with your application
  • upload all your documents

Validation list - documents to include with your online application

You will need to supply extra national and local information. Our validation list will tell you what you need to include - you can read more on our page: 'Validation list - documents to include with your application'. You must read this before making an application.

If you’re applying online through the Planning Portal you can attach this information easily. If you can't attach it or only have a paper copy - you can post it to us. The Planning Portal will take you through the options.

What can't you do online?

Although the Planning Portal's online form covers most applications - there are a few things it cannot do. If you want to apply to extend your existing permission before it expires, or make a minor change, the Planning Portal offers printable forms which you can complete and post to us. See 'Application Types on the Planning Portal' for the forms. Post your form to: Development Management Team, Guildhall 2, High Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1EU.

Some single storey rear extensions do not need planning permission but you do need to notify us in writing before you start the work. You should read our page 'Single storey rear extensions' to find out more.

You cannot apply for associated consent or the modification or discharge of a Planning Obligation through the Planning Portal. For these you should contact us.
