Planning and building control

Most new buildings and major changes to existing buildings or to the local environment need planning permission. If we didn't have a planning system everyone could construct buildings or use land in any way they wanted, no matter what effect it had on other people who live and work in the area. We are responsible for deciding whether a development - anything from an extension on a house to a new shopping centre - should be given permission.

Find out when you need to apply for planning permission, how to apply, how to view planning applications and more.
