The Mayor, Councillor Patrick Codd announced that this year he has chosen the following two charities to be beneficiaries of this year's Appeal:

Born Too Soon is a registered charity set up in 1985 to offer information and support to families whose baby is being cared for in the Neonatal Unit at Kingston Hospital NHS Trust. This specialist unit cares for preterm babies as well as unwell newborn infants. They look after babies from 26 weeks upwards, weighing as little as 450grams. The unit cares for up to 20 precious babies at any one time and last year helped 500 babies. The funds raised will help to purchase specialist equipment.
The Photos below were taken during the Mayor's visit to the Neonatal Unit in June where he met the staff and babies on the unit and also members of their families.

Macmillan Cancer Support provides emotional, practical and medical support to those living with cancer as well as their friends and families. They are known for the work of their nurses and medical services but also provide a support phone line, information services and support groups. They give financial help to those who need it most. With 1 in 17 people losing their house due to a cancer diagnosis, it is becoming more and more evident how essential this service is.

Although this is a national charity, the money raised will be used locally on Macmillan projects and grants. In the Royal Borough of Kingston last year, Macmillan Cancer Support invested over £270,000 in local services and gave out over £10,000 to people living in the borough to help them cope with their cancer diagnosis.
