School Travel Plans aim to reduce the number of trips made to and from the school by car. They support pupils and staff to travel in a sustainable way to school which is safer for them and for the environment.
By developing a Travel Plan schools are encouraged to identify and solve problems associated with the school journey. The Department for Education and Skills and the Department for Transport have set a National target for all schools to have a Travel Plan by the end of 2010
Your School Travel Plan can be used to contribute towards various other initiatives that are important to schools. You can provide supporting evidence for; OFSTED Self Evaluation Forms (SEF's), Sustainable Schools Awards, Eco Schools Awards, and Healthy Schools Awards.
A school travel plan:
Travel Plan actions range from cycle promotions or training to providing cycle parking, from Green Cross Code lessons to building a new Pelican crossing.
A School Travel Plan must meet criteria set by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and the Department for Transport (DfT). If a plan meets these criteria a senior officer in both Education and Transport signs off the plans on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kingston. In addition, schools in London boroughs are required to have their Travel Plans approved by Transport for London.
One hundred percent of state maintained schools in Kingston have an approved Travel Plan, with just two independent schools still working towards approval.
