Electric Vehicles
Why buy an electric vehicle?
- Fuel is electricity which is not taxed and costs on average 1.5-2.5p/mile compared to 10-15p/mile for a conventional car SAVING approx £450/year.
- Electric vehicles are exempt from vehicle excise duty SAVING approx. £100/year.
- Electric vehicles are exempt from the London congestion charge SAVING up to £2000/year
- You can recieve £5,000 off the cost of the vehicle with the governments plug-in car grant*
*Cars currently eligible for the pug-in car grant - Mitsibishi iMiev, Nissan Leaf, Smart foutwo electric, Peugeot iON, Tata Vista, Vauxhall Ampera, Toyota Plug-in Prius, Chevrolet Volt, Renault Fluence ZE.
- Better air quality – Areas around large, busy roads like the A3 through Kingston suffer from poor air quality. Electric vehicles have zero tailpipe emissions. Road traffic is the main cause of poor air quality in the borough, electric vehicles can solve this.
- Quieter roads - Electric vehicles are significantly quieter than conventional cars, if the roads are quieter we can tolerate living near them (more housing), we can open our windows when its hot (less air conditioning). Quiet roads lead to a better quality of life all round. Electric vehicles are not completely silent, and at low speeds when they are very quiet car manufacturers are designing them to make a sound so that they are not dangerous for the hard of hearing.
- Lower CO2 emissions - Electric vehicles are not zero carbon, the electricity they use is generated in power stations which emits CO2 like the rest of our electrical appliances. However because electric motors are more than twice as efficient as internal combustion engines they produce approximately 50% of the CO2 emissions compared to a traditional petrol car.
The council is providing the necessary infrastructure so that anyone living in or visiting Kingston is able to charge their vehicle when they need to top up the battery.
The council has already installed 7 charge points in its own car parks. There are an additional 16 charge points run by other organisations in Kingston. For details on locations of charge points in Kingston and across London visit Source London at www.sourcelondon.net.
Kingston is currently in the process of installing charge points on-street in some of our key district centres, details of these will be made available shortly.
Source London is a pan-London network of charge points. If you own an electric car you can join Source London for an annual membership fee of £100. This gives you access to all Source London points across London, Kingston currently has 17 Source London points across the borough and there are over 160 points across London with more being added all the time.
