Volunteering

Volunteering is one of the key legacy commitments of London 2012

Not only are volunteers integral to the smooth running of the Games, they also have an important role to play in their own communities.  Developing experienced and committed volunteers to work in social, cultural, sporting and work-related settings locally will bring many benefits to Kingston as well as to the 2012 Games overall.

Key elements of Our Cultural Programme will focus on developing volunteers, particularly young people.  We will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills through various initiatives.

By putting volunteering at the heart of Our Cultural Programme, our legacy will be to build a robust volunteering community whose contribution will bring many positive benefits to the borough in the lead up to London 2012 and beyond.

The organisation of volunteers will be co-ordinated by the Go Kingston Team working with Kingston Volunteer Centre. Volunteering opportunities, including LOCOG’s Games Maker and the GLA’s London Ambassador Schemes, will be signposted through the libraries and Kingston Volunteer Centre alongside local volunteering opportunities.

The International Youth Arts Festival has already successfully recruited a team of young volunteers, with some 5,000 young people participating in this year’s festival. Our Cultural Programme will be underpinned by a track record of engagement with young people delivering events for the whole community.
