The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic movements.
Spread over four years, it is designed to give everyone in the UK a chance to be part of London 2012 and inspire creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people.
The culmination of the Cultural Olympiad will be the London 2012 Festival, bringing leading artists from all over the world together from 21 June 2012 in the UK’s biggest ever festival – a chance for everyone to celebrate London 2012 through dance, music, theatre, the visual arts, film and digital innovation and leave a lasting legacy for the arts in the UK.
A Cultural Programme Group has been formed to plan Kingston’s Cultural Programme offer and to ensure it is promoted effectively, through the local and London media.
The Council is working with key partners including Kingston Chamber of Commerce, Kingstonfirst, Kingston University, Kingston College, Community Sport and Physical Activity Network (CSPAN), Go Kingston Volunteering (Kingston Volunteer Centre), The Rose Theatre, local sports and arts organisations, neighbouring borough officers and respective national bodies including Arts Council England and Sport England.
Through our strong partnership working, the Cultural Programme Group will ensure children and adults with physical and learning disabilities are actively engaged in all these activities.
Autumn 2011 saw the launch of the Culture Diary – the diary forms the core of a City-wide marketing campaign, spearheaded by Visit London, to promote the cultural offering to visitors and to the many journalists visiting the Capital during the Games. Information covers ‘City Spectaculars’ such as firework displays and ‘Live Sites’ (big screens with specially commissioned content) as well as local community events taking place in all the London boroughs.
We will make sure local aspirations are included in the Culture Diary and co-ordinate the Borough’s Cultural Programme. We will also be producing our own programme of events that will be taking place in the borough in 2012 for you to get involved in and be part of the celebrations. This programme of events will be in the form of a souvenir brochure which will be available from mid May 2012.
Many events planned for 2012 have already been entered into The London Culture Diary created by the Mayor of London in conjunction with Visit London. This planning tool was developed to collate information of cultural events and activities taking place across the 33 London boroughs throughout 2012. The Culture Diary is now closed to new events but is still accessible to those who have an event included in the Culture Diary to update.
Kingston’s Cultural Programme Diary of events for 2012 will culminate with a series of events beginning on the 2nd of June to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and ending with the Paralympic Games on 9 September. Events are being planned around the borough, incorporating established favourites such as Kingston Aviation Festival, Kingston International Youth Arts Festival, Kingston Carnival, River Festival.
