In 2008 we introduced a new Recycling and Landfill Waste Collection Service to more than 50,000 households in the borough. Due to the effort of residents to recycle more and waste less, the borough’s recycling and composting rate has increased from 25% to an impressive 48%.

Throughout 2010 and 2011, we will be introducing a new Recycling Service for residents who live in flats and, with your help, we hope to increase our recycling rate even further. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution for flats, so we have worked hard to create a tailored service that meets your needs using the space available in your block of flats.
We will be providing you with recycling facilities that have been tailored for the block in which you live. Depending on space you will receive up to six outdoor colour-coded bins for you to place your recycling in.
Please refer to your At a glance information sheet to see which recycling items can be recycled on your property or call the Environmental Services Contact Centre on 020 8547 5002.
The service information booklet also explains where you can take your recycling if it cannot be recycled on your property.
During the roll-out of the new Recycling Service for Flats, you will be receiving indoor recycling containers – a green reusable bag for your dry recyclables and a brown food waste caddy for food waste. (Please see the links to the left which explain in more detail what you can recycle). Once these containers are full, you can take your recycling materials to the outdoor recycling bins at your block. We need your help to ensure that the recycling bins are not contaminated with the wrong recycling items. Depending on the level and type of the contamination (e.g. paper placed in the card bin), an entire vehicle load of recyclables could be rejected when we deliver them to the processing plant. This will result in recyclable waste going to landfill. So please help us increase our recycling rate by sorting your recycling items into the clearly marked bins outside.
Place tins and cans into the bin with a grey lid.
