Planning Enforcement is a necessary and important element in the control of development. Unauthorised development of land can have consequences for public amenity and the environment generally.
Kingston Council is the statutory Local Planning Authority for the Borough. Within the Council's Planning Department there is a team dedicated to Planning Enforcement.
The Council is responsible for making sure developments in the Borough do not take place without the correct permission. If a development has been carried out without necessary permission or not in accordance with planning permission which has been granted, the Council will normally seek the voluntary co-operation of those responsible to resolve the issue, but it does have powers to force action to remedy the situation.
Kingston’s Planning Enforcement unit deals with all reported breaches of planning control (ie all instances where something requiring planning permission has taken place, without permission being obtained).
