Playbuilder is a national project funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and overseen by Play England. We have been awarded funds for the upgrade of 20 existing play areas. The upgrades will be completed in two phases, year 1 which will be completed by 31 March 2010, and year 2 which will be completed by 31 March 2011.
The play areas to be upgraded are a mixture of parks and housing estate sites. The full site list can be found below.
Proposals for which of the boroughs play areas to upgrade were taken to each of the four neighbourhood committee’s in Kingston, those being Kingston Town, Surbiton, Malden’s and Coombe and South of the Borough. The committee’s made decisions based on the current condition of the play area, and the need for play within that catchment area.
The project is aimed at improving play facilities for 8-13 years olds, with a move away from traditional play equipment towards play in a more natural setting, where children are challenged to make up their own games and interact with each other. However, in Kingston we are working towards ‘a Borough for All Ages’ and as such the council will be working with a range of groups, such as Age concern, to shape how the play areas should look.
We have selected three suppliers to undertake the improvements to existing play areas, those Companies being HAGS, Record RSS and Sutcliffe Play.
