Cycle Friendly Employers' Guides

cycling in kingston

The South and West London Transport Conference (SWELTRAC) has published the Cycle Friendly Employers’ Guide, which offers advice on the wide range of facilities, incentives, and promotional activities that employers can introduce to support and encourage cycling to work. These include:

  • secure, covered cycle parking
  • lockers, showers and changing facilities
  • pool bikes and a bicycle mileage allowance for business travel
  • cycle training and maintenance sessions
  • promotional events such as Bike Week
  • bike loan schemes

"Businesses cannot afford not to be cycle friendly" is the message promoted in the Cycle Friendly Employers’ Guide, which was updated and republished in 2005.

Cycling can improve the health, productivity and punctuality of your employees, and also contributes in reducing traffic congestion and pollution.

By becoming cycle friendly, your business will already be well on the way to developing a Workplace Travel Plan. A travel plan is a package of measures that aim to encourage staff and visitors to travel to your site by means other than the private car.

Other available resources include Transport for London's guides to workplace cycle parking and pool bikes, and Bike For All's excellent overview of bike loan schemes from the employer's perspective, all available below.

To obtain your free copy of the Cycle Friendly Employers’ Guide, or for any further information about cycling to work, please contact the Council’s Workplace Travel Plan Officer by telephone on 020 8547 5760 or email at travel.plans@rbk.kingston.gov.uk .
