As mentioned in the last newsletter the branding for travel awareness across London has changed from ‘good going’ to ‘DIY Planet Repairs’.
Throughout 2007 the Mayor of London will be continuing to put environmental issues such as Climate Change at the top of his agenda, in order to cut London's carbon emissions and make London a cleaner, greener, more sustainable city. The Greater London Authority agreed to promote the concept of Planet Repairs and that the five key areas related to climate change should adopt the DIY Planet Repairs branding.
You may already have seen advertising related to some of the following Planet Repairs strands: Travel / Energy Efficiency / Recycling / Tree Conservation / Water Conservation.
Thousands of Londoners will take to their local streets on In Town Without My Car Day 2007, as normally busy streets are closed to cars and lorries and become social spaces.
Maple Road in Surbiton will be closed to traffic on 21 September 2007. Cars, vans and lorries will be replaced with sofas, live street theatre, music and fun activities for children at Maple Infants’ and St Andrew’s and St Mark’s schools during school hours. Information and entertainment is open to the general public after school time so drop in to find out more after 3pm.
‘Streets for people’ is the theme for this year’s In Town Without My Car celebrations. The international celebration of environmentally friendly transport will enable local people to experience what urban streets could be like without traffic, and if car journeys around town were replaced by sustainable transport such as cycling, walking and public transport. The event is supported by Transport for London and over fifteen local councils across London.
Kingston Council will also use the event to promote sustainable travel to residents with information on cycle training and bike maintenance, car sharing and local public transport options.
Come along and visit on the day to find out more about our efforts to get Kingston’s residents and visitors using an alternative to the car.

This year’s Walk Once a Week event is an exciting challenge aimed at linking schools and pupils together to support a common theme – healthy and sustainable school journeys. It is scheduled to commence on the 26 September 2007.
We are asking Kingston’s schools to select a group of school children to walk to the next nearest school with a ‘Walking Charter’ to demonstrate the school’s commitment to the WoW campaign. These pupils will then pass the Walking Charter over to the next school. This school would, as before, walk the Charter to the next nearest school and the cycle would continue across a number of schools within the borough.
Each London borough will have their own Charter and these Charters would be on tour for a one week period – commencing at the first school on the 26th of September - The Big WoW Day and finishing on the 3rd October – the first Wednesday of International Walk to School Month.
London is buzzing with the news that for one remarkable day, many of the capital's roads will be completely traffic-free and open only to cyclists.
On Sunday 23rd September, London goes traffic-free
Londoners – from Brixtoners on BMXs to Crouch Enders on choppers –will be coming from far and wide to ride down the city’s most famous roads, taking in sights like London Eye, Big Ben, and Buckingham Palace. It’s open to everyone and completely free to sign up.
Transport for London has organised a London Walking Weekend offering free guided walks in every borough on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September.
