Information, incentives and opportunities to help  you get fit, save time and save money!

From May, Transport for London will be working in partnership with Kingston Council and the residents of up to 24,000 households in and around New Malden.

This exciting new project will provide free information, incentives and opportunities to help you identify a range of alternatives for your everyday journeys. The advice offered will be tailored to fit your lifestyle and personal needs.

Maybe learning how to incorporate walking or cycling into your weekly routine will help you achieve your personal health and fitness goals? Would finding ways to combine your everyday journeys help you save time? Having an increased knowledge of the travel options available to you will not only give you greater flexibility in planning how you travel, but it may even help you reduce the costs of running your car.

Finding realistic ways to use your car less also helps reduce the congestion and pollution in and around your local community and town centres.

If you don’t live in or around New Malden, don’t worry! Our aim is to talk to almost two thirds of the 61,000 households in the borough by 2009.

For more information, call the Travel Awareness Officer, Anne Sharman, on 020 8547 5876.

New for 2006: Cyclist Training Plus for children

If you have a child who has completed their cycling proficiency at school, book them in for this new scheme launched by Kingston Council.

We now offer Cyclist Training Plus (CT+) for children who have completed “Cycling Proficiency” at their school. CT+ gives on-road cycling experience and training, so your child can build their skills and you can feel more confident about them undertaking journeys – such           as to and from school – by bike.

The ratio is 1 instructor for 2  trainees, so you can be sure your child will get a high standard of training. All our instructors are  accredited to the National Standard.

CT+ is free for children who live or  go to school in the borough.

For more details call the Cyclist Training Co-ordinator, Eric Chasseray, on 020 8547 5826.

Get a friend to sign a pledge and receive a free gift!

The good going campaign was launched across London in September 2004. Since then, over 9200 residents in London have signed a pledge to say they will try to use their car a little less. Over 550 of these residents live in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

We believe word of mouth is one of the best ways to communicate a message - so we’re asking all our existing pledge holders to help us by asking a friend who lives in the borough to sign a pledge too.

To say thanks, we’ll give you both a free copy of the book “Cutting your car use” which is full of interesting and useful tips to help you save be healthy, be green and save money!

Just ask your friend to email their name and address to anne.sharman@rbk.kingston.gov.ukThey must also email YOUR name so we know who to thank! Alternatively, they can call 020 8547 5876 to give their details.

All aboard the Walking Bus!

A Walking Bus is a safe, fun and healthy way to travel to and from school. It comprises parent volunteers and teachers who act as ‘drivers’ and ‘conductors’, and up to 16 school children, who are passengers on the ‘bus’. The pupils are escorted to school along a set route, picking up more passengers at ‘bus stops’ along the way.

All Walking Buses are different! They vary to suit the needs of the children and their parents and the availability of volunteers.

Benefits for those involved include:-

- More exercise for you and your    child.

- Safety for your child who will walk to school as part of a large and visible group.

- The opportunity for your child to learn pedestrian skills and road sense.

- Improved air quality in your local community from less car trips.

- Parents have more time for other activities or work. By sharing the responsibility, each parent spends less time taking their child to school.

If you think you and other parents at your school could benefit from a Walking Bus, call the Community Walking Officer, Sam Merison, on 020 8547 5312.
