Christmas mocktails

Since 1999, fatalities involving drink driving have been increasing nationally. In response, the Council’s Road Safety & Travel Awareness Unit has put together a leaflet of “mocktail” recipes for you to enjoy with family and friends this Christmas. Download a leaflet of recipes. This leaflet is also available in libraries within the borough.

If you will be drinking alcohol over the Festive Season, why not catch a bus or train and let someone else take care of the driving?

Refurbished SouthWest Trains result in wider aisles and wider smiles!

The refurbishment of the first 455 train has just been completed, as part of SouthWest Trains £67 million refurbishment project.

Managing Director Andrew Haines said: "This project underwent a huge consultation period so I feel it is fair to say that the train has been designed by its users. At every level of the design process, passengers and passenger groups, as well as key organisations such as the British Transport Police, have reviewed the final design of this refurbished train."

Improvements to the fleet of trains include on-board CCTV, passenger information systems and flexible spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles.

The current 3+2 seating has also changed - the middle of the three seats has been removed creating wider aisles. This means passengers will be able to pass each other more easily, with the end result being passengers are more likely to move down the carriage, leading to less congestion and faster boarding and alighting times.

"My other car is a bus" campaign

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a new £2million advertising campaign to increase bus use during off peak hours.

The three-month campaign will use TV, radio, cinema and print advertising to target families and school children in an effort to ease suburban congestion and promote buses as a viable and easy alternative to cars.

The campaign rolls out as the latest Department for Transport (DfT) statistics show the number of bus journeys in the capital reached 168 million last year despite a fall in usage in the rest of England.

The London bus network is now one of the largest and most comprehensive urban systems in the world. Each weekday 8,000 London buses carry 6 million passengers on over 700 different routes. Bus use has risen by 11% and night bus use by 29% in the past year. The extra 168 million passenger trips have driven bus use to its highest level for over 35 years.

Walkability

The Walkability Project, being piloted by Living Streets in Harlesden, Hanwell, Harold Hill and The Heathway, will work to make walking in and around London easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

The Walkability Project will identify barriers to walking and offer solutions. Local residents, businesses and community groups from the four pilot towns will be invited to participate in the Community Street Audit - a method of using the consumer's view point.

The Association of London Government is funding the project. For the latest news about the project visit www.livingstreets.org.uk
