What is good going?

The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is taking a lead on a London wide travel awareness campaign called good going which was launched across London in September 2004.

We can improve the health and quality of life for everyone living, working, visiting or being educated in London by reducing traffic congestion and vehicle emissions in the Capital.

Through good going, the Council and its partners will promote a wide range of initiatives designed to encourage us to walk, cycle or to use public transport instead of the car, when possible. Car sharing and using low pollution vehicles are also an option.

A large number of good going initiatives and activities will be rolled out in Kingston upon Thames in the weeks and months ahead. This newsletter will keep you in touch with them.

Individuals from all sectors of the Royal Borough will be encouraged to play their part by formally signing the good going pledge.

How to make a pledge

good going pledge card

The good going pledge lies at the heart of good going.

It allows individuals and organisations to pledge their support to reducing traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

You can sign up at any good going event or initiative or online at www.goodgoing.co.uk.

If you would like bulk copies of the pledge application form for work colleagues to complete, please email your details to goodgoing@towerhamlets.gov.uk

Everyone who makes a pledge receives a good going loyalty card which gives them London wide and borough specific offers and incentives organised by Transport for London (TfL).

There will be ‘lottery- style’ prize draws for pledge cardholdersas well as  regular updates on the good going campaign.

Very good going Surbiton Station!

A redevelopment of the cycle parking facilities at Surbiton Station, officially launched in May 2004, recently won the London Cycling Campaign "Best Cycle Facility" award and was also highly commended in the National Station of the Year in the Connections Cycle-Rail Awards 2004.

Commuter with folding bike

A number of other train stations in the borough also have excellent cycle parking facilities, so why not consider cycling to the station next time you need to catch a train - now that’s good going!

Kingston Christmas Park and Ride

Enjoy your trip to Kingston this Christmas by using the Park and Ride scheme, operating between Chessington and Kingston Town Centre.  Operating every day until

Saturday 8 January (excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day), it allows you to park FREE at Chessington World of Adventures and take the Park and Ride K50 to Kingston town centre. Drop off and pick up is in Eden Street, Alderman Judge Mall.

For more information about the Kingston Park and Ride scheme, call 020 7222 1234 or visit Park and Ride.

good going Learning Land Nurseries

A big congratulations to Learning Land Nurseries in New Malden who recently won the “Environment” category for the Local Business Awards. The award was given for their commitment to the environment by actively encouraging all parents and staff to walk, cycle or use public transport. Currently, 70% of parents and 86% of staff do not use cars to get to the nursery.

Learning Land has achieved this success through implementing a Travel Plan. If your workplace has issues such as parking problems,  a Travel Plan can help overcome them. For more information, call the Council’s Workplace Travel Plan Officer on 020 8547 5876.

Great going in good going week!

good going week was held across London from 15 to 22 September. The Council’s Road Safety and Travel Awareness Unit organised a range of events to encourage people to think about the link that exists between using sustainable transport and reducing traffic congestion, traffic related illness, as well as noise and air pollution.

They also highlighted the different travel choices, be they walking, cycling, public transport or car sharing.

Using an alternative to the car – even just every now and then – is what we call good going!

If you want advice on topics including which train you need, the best cycle route, upcoming walks and where to buy your bus tickets in the borough, visit www.kingston.gov.uk/goodgoing. It’s got all you need to know about travelling to, from and within the borough using an alternative to the private car.
