Kingston upon Thames is lucky to have 10 School Crossing Patrols (SCP’s) across the borough who help children and adults alike cross the road on their way to school during busy times on the roads.
However, the SCP’s are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of drivers who fail to stop, as requested, at their crossings.
In a bid to remind drivers that ‘Stop Means Stop’ Kingston’s SCP’s and the Council’s Road Safety and Travel Awareness Unit have joined forces with local police, councillors and the Mayors office to ensure that this message is being received loud and clear.
The campaign reminds drivers that, by law, they are required to stop when ordered to do so, and by failing to stop, drivers are putting the lives of children, parents and the school crossing patrol in danger.
A London-wide publicity campaign includes adverts on the back of London buses to remind drivers of the penalties if they fail to stop.
Council’s across London are working with the police to ensure that drivers who fail to stop are prosecuted accordingly. Failure to stop can result in the driver being issued with a £1000 fine and three penalty points on their licence – or even disqualification from driving.
