'Get Going During good going Week'

September - October 2006

This year, good going week will be held across London from 15 to 24 September to promote and celebrate sustainable transport. You’ll be able to take part in a number of free activities across the borough including:-

Friday 15 (Fit Friday)

A number of organisations in Kingston town centre will take part in an afternoon cycle ride on the day.  Take part by walking, cycling or using public transport for your commute.

Sunday 17 (National Walking Day / Worth the Walk)

Qualified walk leaders will be guiding us on a walk along the Hogsmill river which will take place in the Tolworth Court Farm area and will last approximately 1.5 hours.  For more information and to reserve your place on the walk, call us on 020 8547 5865

Monday 18 (Day of Cycling)

Why not join Kingston Police and the Travel Awareness Team’s cycle trainers to make your bike safe and secure?
Dr Bike will be in Kingston town centre offering free bike checks and the Police will be providing free secure marking for the first 100 bikes brought along on the day.

The Bike Doctors and the Police will be in Little Wood Street, next to All Saints Church from 11am until 3pm.

Wednesday 20 (WOW – Walk on Wednesday)

Today is Walk on Wednesday!  Why not consider walking to work?  What about walking to school?  Or you could even walk to the local shops?
Debra the Zebra will be visiting a local school to launch the Autumn Walking to School campaign.

Walking is not only a free form of transport but it is a good way to increase fitness and contributes towards your recommended 10,000 steps a day.

Saturday 23 (Days of Leisure – Safer Travel at Night)

Kingston clubbers will be receiving advice from the good going team on how to ensure they use licensed taxi companies to travel home at the end of the night.

Sunday 24 (Days of Leisure – Warm up before you work-out)

We will be linking with staff at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre to give encouragement and advice on how to travel to their recreation centre by sustainable means.  By walking or cycling to the fitness centre you are actually warming up in preparation for exercise.

Women on Wheels Information Evening

An information evening will be held on Monday 18 September about how to choose the right bike, what accessories there are and how they can help you, bicycle security and hear the adventures of one Woman on Wheels.  There will be nibbles, prizes and give-aways.

The event will be held from 6pm to 7.30pm at the Hawker Centre, Lower Ham Road, Kingston.

If you have a friend who you think could be a Woman on Wheels too, bring them and you’ll both go in to the draw to win a free 1:1 cyclist training session from our team of National Standard Cycle Instructors.

Please call 020 8547 5865 for more information and to reserve your seat.  Bookings will be based on a first come first served basis.

For information on any of the activities during good going week contact the Road Safety and Travel Awareness Team on 020 8547 5865 or email on travel.awareness@rbk.kingston.gov.uk

To take part in one of our forthcoming Women on Wheels social rides contact us on 020 8547 5865 and we will reserve you a place.

All you will need to do is show up with your bike and our National Standard Cycle Instructors will be on hand to support you and give advice.

Walk to Work Week – 7 to 11 August

The good going campaign kicked off in Kingston Town Centre to promote walking to work.

As part of Walk to Work Week, Kingston Council distributed almost one thousand walking packs to local companies.

Also on Monday 7 August, Kingston shoppers were treated to a free pedometer and a health check.

Walking is considered by many experts to be almost the perfect form of exercise! Regular brisk walking can reduce high blood pressure, help you to lose or manage your weight, reduce stress levels, aid sleeping patterns, tone muscles and strengthens bones.

Walking is a great way for busy people to integrate the exercise they need into their daily routine and is the only form of transport that is completely free!

For further information about Walk to Work or the Walking for Health Scheme please contact the Travel Awareness Team on 020 8547 5865 or email travel.awareness@rbk.kingston.gov.uk

Free travel for under-18’s in full-time education

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, announced that he has given the go ahead for a key manifesto pledge that bus and tram fares for under-18’s in full time education will be abolished.

The scheme will start in September this year.

Free travel for under-18’s in full time education is designed to promote the benefits of public transport to school leavers, whilst helping young people to continue studies and improve employment prospects.

Young people aged 16 -17 will need to apply for an Oyster photocard in September when schools and colleges re-open to qualify for free travel.  For further information visit www.tfl.gov.uk
