Women on Wheels

In an effort to see more Kingston women on 2 wheels, we are organising events for those new to cycling.

Come and join our ride on Sunday, 20 August, which will be lead by Nationally Accredited Cyclist Instructors. This ride will provide an opportunity for inexperienced women cyclists to get together and undertake a 2-3 hour social ride along a quiet route.

The ride will depart from the Market Place, Kingston at 10am.

There will also be a Women on Wheels Information Evening held at a local venue on Monday, 18th September, offering advice on how to choose the right bike, what accessories you need and bike security.

To book a place on the ride or at the seminar or for further information on cyclist training courses, please contact the Road

Safety and Travel Awareness Unit on 0208 547 5865

Roadside Poster Launch

A competition was held throughout local schools in the borough to design a poster promoting ‘You’re better off by bike’.

877 competition entries were received. The winner was Courtney Lartey from Green Lane Primary School in Worcester Park who won a good going goody bag.

Courtney’s poster will be displayed across the borough on roadside poster boards.

E2E4E

A team of cyclists from the Royal Borough of Kingston cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats (1040 miles in 15 stages), in aid of the Asian earthquake relief.

The event was given the title ‘E2E4E’ which stood for ‘End to End for Earthquake’ and raised nearly £12,000 for two charities, the British Red Cross – Asian Earthquake Appeal, and the Fountain House Lahore Project.

The team consisted of 5 full E2E4E’s and 17 stagieres. In total around 10,300 miles were cycled puncture-free!

Staff Cycle Confidence Training

Nine members of staff from Fernhill Primary School in Kingston enjoyed a group session to build cycle confidence.

The school’s Travel Plan had identified staff cycling as a potential growth area. One lady had not ridden a bike for the 25 years she had lived in the UK and proved to herself and everybody else that she had not lost her touch!

For more information about Cyclist Training please contact the Road Safety and Travel Awareness Unit on 020 8547 5865.

Free Travel for under 18s in full time education

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, announced that he has given the go ahead for a key manifesto pledge that bus and tram fares for under-18’s in full time education will be abolished.

The scheme will start in September this year.

Free travel for under-18’s in full time education is designed to promote the benefits of public transport to school leavers, whilst helping young people to continue studies and improve employment prospects.

Young people aged 16 -17 will need to apply for an Oyster photocard in September when schools and colleges re-open to qualify for free travel.
