The following is a guide or framework to help you develop and write your Travel Plan:-
- analysis of data to identifty shortcomings, strengths and alternatives to single occupancy car use
- survey of travel patterns (staff, students, parents, visitors)
- site audit to identify existing transport options
- write an Action Plan which sets out realistic actions and targets you would like to achieve
- establish an annual monitoring programme to determine how effective the plan has been and identify any new initiatives.
Incorporate each of the steps above into a written document, along with an introduction to set out where the school is located, what the school's catchment area is and what the purpose of the plan is.
Key advice about writing your plan:
- the production of your plan does not have to be time consuming or costly
- many schools have successfully incorporated elements of writing the plan into the school curriculum
- flexibility is the key to a successful plan. Have regular reviews in reponse to changing circumstances and ensure the plan is kept up to date
- it is essential that your plan addresses your problems and provides you with solutions to those problems
- the initiatives in the plan do not have to be achieved in one dramatic leap: include a number of small steps to take place over time and have both short and long-term targets.
