King Charles Road forms part of the London Cycle Network route linking Kingston Town Centre with Berrylands, Tolworth and destinations towards Chessington. This cycle route across the bridge is used by many students travelling to and from Hollyfield School in nearby Lamberts Road. At present cyclists crossing the bridge southbound must dismount and walk their cycles along the pavements before remounting at the southern end, although in practice many cyclists ride along the narrow pavements bringing them into conflict with pedestrians.
Concern has been raised about the safety of students using the bridge and in order to improve the southbound cycle route across the bridge it has been decided to reduce the traffic lanes to one northbound lane to provide for a southbound cycle track across the bridge. This will be introduced as an experimental scheme on the 14 July 2008 as approved by the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee in October 2007. The scheme is funded by Transport for London as part of the grant to Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames to improve School Travel Plans.
The introduction of a southbound cycle track across the bridge will improve the safety and environment for cyclists and pedestrians. Whilst some delays to northbound traffic flows may occur with the reduction of traffic capacity to one lane, it is not expected that this should lead to a significant increase in congestion in King Charles Road and local roads serving Berrylands.
During the experimental period there will be ongoing monitoring of traffic levels on surrounding roads. The Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee are planning to review the outcome of the experimental scheme at their meeting on 11 February 2009.

The Royal Borough in partnership with Transport for London will be introducing changes to the bus stop in St Marks Hill by Surbiton Station in Autumn 2007
There will also be space for the bus’s wheelchair ramp to be operated safely.

The Council is considering a proposal to extend the hours of parking control in the town centre area of Kingston to 10.30pm throughout the week and we would like to hear your views.
The Council has developed a number of strategic policies for Kingston, some of which have been already implemented e.g. Castle Street Pedestrianisation, extended hours of control for disabled parking bays and night time kiosks for booking of mini-cabs. The extension of controlled hours supports these policies by removing obstructive and dangerous parking and encourages use of our safer car parks and public transport.
At the same time, we are also asking residents in the surrounding streets whether or not they would also like to have the hours of control extended if, in their opinion, there would be a 'knock'on' effect into residential streets that only have parking controls up to 6.30pm.
The closing date for responses was Monday 6 August 2007
