We are responsible for the School Crossing Patrol service. Our staff contribute greatly to children's road safety and give parents the confidence to allow their children to walk to school.
However, there have been reports of drivers failing to obey the School Crossing Patrol Stop sign.
Failure to stop can result in the driver being issued with a £1000 fine and three penalty points on their licence – or even disqualification from driving.
About School Crossing Patrols
What does a School Crossing Patrol do?
School Crossing Patrols are employed to help anyone (children or adult) cross busy roads.
How does a school qualify for a School Crossing Patrol?
Schools can contact the Smarter Travel Group, who will carry out a survey of the number of vehicles and children crossing the road during the times when pupils are arriving at and leaving school. Consideration will be given to the most suitable way to help pedestrians - for example, it may be most helpful to install traffic calming measures - but if it is decided that a School Crossing Patrol is the most effective safety measure, a vacancy will be advertised.
What is involved in becoming a School Crossing Patrol?
If you want to apply or find out more please contact the Smarter Travel Group via email:
smartertravel@rbk.kingston.gov.uk or call 020 8547 5002. You will need to attend an interview, pass medical and eye sight tests and have a police check before you can be appointed.
What sort of people become School Crossing Patrols?
Community minded people up to the age of 80 years who are interested in helping children and their families. Many of our School Crossing Patrols apply because they already have contact with the school that the vacancy serves - perhaps their own children are at the school or they have a part-time job at the school.
What are the hours and pay?
The standard working week is 10 hours, one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon for term time only. Applicants who can only do the morning shift or afternoon shift will be sympathetically considered. The hours may well fit in with someone who already has to make the to and from school journey, but could also suit someone who is retired or who has another part-time job.
Pay for a 10 hour week is £3,548-£3,607 per year paid in equal monthly instalments - this is based on an hourly rate of £7.83-£7.99.
When a School Crossing Patrol starts work
Full training is given and regular visits are made by members of the Smarter Travel Group to make sure that everything is going well. There are group training sessions for all School Crossing Patrols twice a year.
