All primary schools with children aged 4 to 11 are invited to take part and encourage parents and children to walk together to and from school, rather than going by car.
The campaign runs all year round with a different theme held during each term.

During the school’s nominated Walking to School Week, Debra the Zebra will often make an appearance at school assemblies, to reinforce the campaign's positive messages about the benefits of walking, which include:-
These environmental, health and road safety messages are reinforced by a set of campaign materials, featuring Debra the Zebra. Each school taking part has supplies of a story booklet about Debra, teachers' packs, as well as stickers, sticker cards, posters and leaflets to distribute. Pupils collect a sticker each time they walk to school during the week and a full sticker card earns them the Walking to School certificate. Feedback from schools and children indicates that children enjoy walking to school. For more information, read the Walking to School Reports below.

In February 2005, we launched a "Debra the Zebra" story book which further supported our Walking to School campaign.
Our Autumn 2006 week, yielded a new friend for Debra to appear in the sequel book 'Debra Has A Plan'.
Some children and their parents walk to school on a regular basis all year round as part of a Walking Bus.
