Safer Routes to School (SRtS) projects involve partnership working between school communities, Kingston Council’s Neighbourhood Traffic engineers and the Road Safety and Travel Awareness unit.

SRtS projects are funded by Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor’s fund. The funding can be used for engineering work that will improve the local road environment and / or to make routes to school safer and more pleasant for those that travel sustainably to school by walking, cycling or using public transport.
Through a School Travel Plan, a school community will have identified issues with the road environment that they feel are a safety concern or that act as a barrier to people travelling in a more sustainable manner. Through a process of meetings and consultation with the school community, these areas and concerns are addressed by the traffic engineers.
SRtS projects have been running successfully in the Royal Borough since 1999. To date, the Council has worked with over 30 schools. An example of one such school is King Athlestan Primary in Kingston, whose SRtS project included amendments to the zebra crossing outside the school gate and works to improve access to and from the cemetery path, allowing parents to push their buggies through without the need to fold them.
An important part of SRtS projects is an increase in Travel Awareness and Road Safety through education.
Future projects will be closely linked to School Travel Plan. objectives.
