Pedestrian training in the early years of a child’s life is very important to help reduce the instances of road accidents and casualties.
It is not only the provision of training, but also the type of training that is important.
Training needs to be practical, on the roadside, and as close to the realistic circumstances of individuals as possible.
Pedestrian training enhances the Safer Routes to School project and helps children understand the principles of using safer places to cross roads, the meaning of traffic calming and why these features are there to help them.
The Walking to School project and Walking Buses also link in very closely with practical pedestrian training.
The opportunity for parents to teach their children how to cross roads safely becomes greater when they accompany their children to school Guidance to schools on setting up Practical Pedestrian Skills Training is available from the Council.
