The borough's Walking to School mascot, Debra the Zebra, is entering a new chapter of her life.
Debra has been successful over the past few years in encouraging more children to walk and cycle to school in a safe manner. She has also launched her two story books - Debra To The Rescue and Debra Has A Plan.
The books are written to help children understand the importance of using more sustainable methods of transport to get to and from school and to understand their effect on the environment, as well as providing reminders about road safety.
Debra's popularity has grown over the years, so much so that she is now taking to the stage! A theatrical script has been developed by the Road Safety and Travel Awareness Unit, based on the second book, Debra Has A Plan.
In the play, Debra helps Pine Street Primary School to develop their School Travel Plan. With the help of the Junior Road Safety Officers, she teaches the children about the health and environmental benefits of walking and cycling to school and the importance of crossing the road safely, and how all this can benefit the school, pupils and the local community.
