2003 Road Casualty Report

Greater London 2003

There were 31,811 road traffic collisions reported to the Metropolitan and City Police within the greater London area during 2003.
This represents a 6% decrease compared with 2002.

As a result of these incidents there were 38,430 casualties. 272 were fatally injured; 4,892 were seriously injured and 33,266 were slightly injured.

Fatalities in 2003 have fallen by 3% from 279 to 272 compared with 2002. Serious injuries decreased by 9% and slight injuries decreased by 7%. Overall, casualties in 2003 decreased by 7% compared with 2002.

Kingston upon Thames 2003

The road casualty toll in 2003 stands at 525. This represents an overall reduction of 4.4% compared with 2002. As in 2002, there were 3 people who were killed. 82 people were seriously injured, which is a reduction of 2.4% compared to 2002 and there were 440 slight injuries, a reduction of 4.8% compared to 2002.

Pedal cyclists

There was a 20% reduction in killed and serious injured casualties in 2003 compared with 2002. The Council continues to provide more training, education, cycle lanes and better crossing facilities at junctions along the road. The number of casualties who were slightly injured rose by 17%; the total casualties increased by 8.9%.

Pedestrian casualties

The number of pedestrians who were killed and seriously injured in 2003 remains at 25 as in 2002. However there was a reduction of 8.2% in slight injuries and 6.5% fall in the total pedestrian casualties in 2003 compared with 2002.

Powered Two Wheeler casualties

There was 11% increase in the number of powered two wheelers casualties compared with 2002. There were no fatalities to this group but of concern is a 58% increase in the seriously injured casualties and 4% increase in the slight category.
The Council is tackling the increased casualty rate for the powered two wheelers through comprehensive traffic management measures, education and enforcement of speeding. National and London-wide publicity campaigns to address the potential danger that these riders face in the congested road network are fully supported by the Council, and particular emphasis was given to this user group at the Speed Awareness Day held in April 2004.
