There are over 3 million people riding horses on public roads and much progress has been made to improve rider safety in recent years.
Educating motorists as to the care needed when encountering horses on the road is an important aspect of improving the safety of the horse rider.
The British Horse Riding and Road Safety Test has helped greatly in raising the safety of riders on the road.Introduced in 1976, some 7,000 riders now take this test annually and the Council's Road Safety Unit offers support and assistance.
