Is drug driving a bigger issue than drink driving?

Campaigns over the last ten years have regularly emphasised the dangers of drinking and driving, and recently there has been a new focus on drug driving.
Research undertaken in the London area in early 2005 identified that drug driving is a major issue across the capital and is especially common in young drivers.
However, awareness of the effects and penalties are little known and there is evidence of very little concern among drug drivers of being caught.
In 2006 an eight week London wide campaign was launched aiming to reduce the number of young people driving under the influence of drugs and deterring others from from doing so.
The campaign also served to highlight the effect of drugs on driving and the penalties that may arise.
Anti-drug driving posters have been distributed widely by the Council's Road Safety and Travel Awareness Unit to schools, colleges, Kingston University, pubs, clubs, and community notice boards.
