Guidance for New Signs

From time to time requests are made for directional signs to places of local interest.  Some of these requests are justified but others would be used by very few people and would simply add to sign clutter.

In order to establish a consistent and equitable approach to the consideration of requests for signs to local destinations, the Council adopted the following signing policy, based on guidelines contained in the Normal of Practice Highways and Traffic Management in London produced by the ALBES.

1.    Hospitals, Stations, Public Buildings, etc.

Other than hospitals with a casualty department, signed only from the nearest road on the signed network if their location is not otherwise obvious.

2.   Places of Worship

The presumption should be that directions to places of worship are not signed unless they attract large numbers of occasional visitors and are not obviously visible from the signed network.

3.   Sports Grounds, Recreation Centres, Educational Establishments.

Such destinations to be signed only from the nearest road on the signed network if they are not obviously located and only if they are of more than local significance.

4.   Private and Commercial Premises

Signing of Industrial Estates permitted but individual private or commercial premises may not be signed unless there are overriding reasons on traffic grounds.  Commercial names may not be included in any directional sign.

5.  Tourist Attractions

These signs, which consist of white symbols on a brown background, cover a very wide range of attractions.  Applications for such signs will be considered in the context of the criteria set out in the Department of Transport Advice Notes and other Guidance.
