Advice and Guidance
- If you wish to place Mobile Crane on the road, you will have to have to apply to the Local Highway Authority for a licence.
- Mobile Cranes can in certain circumstances be placed on single and double yellow lines. They can also be placed within residential parking bays.
- We can issue a licence to the Cane Company to place a mobile crane on a highway.
- Your contractor will have to supply us with evidence that they are covered with Public Liability Insurance for £5million.
- The Crane Company will be responsible for any damage to the fabric of the highway caused by the mobile crane. They will also be responsible for any damage caused to private property.
- It is a serious offence to place anything on a highway without permission of the Local Highway Authority (Highway Act 1980). If mobile cranes are placed on a highway without a licence, we can prosecute the Crane Company
- You are responsible for the actions of your contractors, To ensure that your contractor has applied for a licence ask for a copy of the licence or the licence number
- Check the conditions on the application form to ensure that you or your contractor has complied

- Alternatively, please visit the Environmental Reception in Guildhall 2 between the hours of 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Go to 2nd Floor reception and ask for Highway Licensing if your request is urgent.
3. Your licence
- We aim to process an application within three working days. Once we have received your completed application and a cheque for the fee and refundable deposit we will process your application and post the licence to you.
- There are occasions where we will have to refuse an application however we will endeavour to assist and alternative locations for the storage of materials will be put forward.
Charges for Considering an Application for Cranes on the Highway
- 1.A charge of £140 will be made to consider an application for placing a Mobile Crane on the highway. This charge covers,
- ·Administrations, site meeting, and banking. If the application is successful a licence will be valid for one month.
· A charge of £45 per hour will be made for every hour i.e. additional site visits
