Overhanging Apparatus on the Highway

  • If wish to fix something that overhangs a highway you must apply to us for a licence.
  • We can issue a licence to that will allow you to fix something over a highway
  • You will have to supply us with evidence that you are covered with Public Liability Insurance for £6million.
  • You will be responsible for any personal injury, damage caused to the highway and private property.
  • It is a serious offence to place anything over a highway without permission of the Local Highway Authority (Highway Act 1980). If you fix something that is overhanging the highway without a licence, we will prosecute.
  • Check the conditions on the application form to ensure that you or your contractor have complied
  • You must supply a copy of the drivers accreditation

2 Send us your application form

  • Send us your application form. You can do this by post to:

  • Alternatively, please visit the Environmental Reception in Guildhall 2 between the hours of  9am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

3. Your licence

  • We aim to process an application within three working days. Once we have received your completed application and a cheque for the fee and refundable deposit we will process your application and post the licence to you. There are occasions where we will have to refuse an application

Charges for Considering an Application for overhangs on the Highway

1.A copy of Public Liability Insurance for £6 million pounds must be produced before the Highway Authority can consider the application to overhang the highway.

2.You must supply a copy of the drivers accreditation

3.You will be responsible for any damage caused by the crane to the highway, street furniture, private property and personal injury.

Charges for Considering an Application for overhangs on the Highway

A charge of £180 will be made to consider this application; if the application is successful a licence will be issued for the remainder of that month.

Additional months will be charged at £120
